Ondal grows up believing a dokkaebi — a Korean goblin — killed his mother, and sets out to track one down and take his revenge. During a fight with a goblin named Kim Seobang he loses an arm, and learns that the creature who actually harmed his mother is not a true dokkaebi at all, but something else that has been committing atrocities under the dokkaebi's name. Kim Seobang, for his part, has been hiding in a cave on Achasan mountain for over a century, bound by a promise he made to a human long ago. Eager to expose whatever is tarnishing the dokkaebi's name, he gives Ondal his own right arm and his legendary sword, Mangnani, and the two set off together. Their journey reveals that a man named Gwak Bu-eon is manipulating oni — supernatural creatures from another world — to serve his own greed.
