Surindang presents two interconnected tales. In the first, the gods of the heavenly realm are overjoyed — perhaps a little too overjoyed — when a child named Hanul is born destined to become the one true sage-king bridging the divine and human worlds. But with sky-high expectations come sky-high pressures, and the real question is whether all that divine enthusiasm will raise a wise ruler or a spoiled disaster. In the second tale, two sisters carry blessings bestowed long ago by a phoenix: one has inexhaustible talent for needlework, and the other is fated to give birth to a sage-king — a fate she, a firm non-believer in marriage, finds more like a curse. When a fugitive phoenix with an injured scale appears at their door, the elder sister strikes a deal: mend his scale in exchange for freeing her younger sister from the prophecy. What follows is a mysterious and romantic journey as the sisters fight to rewrite their destinies against every temptation and hardship that stands in their way.
