Carlyle is a mad duke infamous for killing his own wife out of obsessive love — and the heroine finds herself suddenly possessing the body of that doomed wife. To make things stranger, she meets Carlyle through a political marriage arranged when they are both very young, and he turns out to be nothing more than a small, unremarkable little boy. She decides that if she raises him well, she might be able to shape him into a decent man instead of the monster the story has in store. Her plan works — Carlyle grows up wonderfully. Now all she has to do is hand him off to the heroine he's meant to be with and disappear. She even sets up a fake lover and stages a midnight escape to make a clean break. So why, after everything, is he following her instead of the heroine he was destined for?
