The world has been swallowed by darkness. A black witch has driven humanity into a single massive city where light and color still exist, while the rest of the world lies shrouded in black. Humanity pushes back through pioneering expeditions to reclaim lost territory, and a boy named Kay dreams of joining one of those expeditions. But because he was born without any color — a "colorless" — he is shunned and turned away at every turn. Then one day, an unforeseen incident leaves Kay with the color black, and everything changes.
