Jaein has grown up in the shadow of a violent father, but when he dies of a mysterious illness, she dares to imagine a happy future with her mother and younger sister Suha. That hope is short-lived — her mother soon dies of illness too, and Jaein herself is given a terminal diagnosis. As if that weren't enough, a distant uncle shows up out of nowhere, threatening to take Suha and demanding the insurance payout and funeral money. Overwhelmed and barely nineteen, Jaein curses whatever god would allow this and falls asleep in despair — only to wake up to a pair of crimson eyes staring down at her from the darkness. The mysterious figure, D, makes her an offer: carry out one mission to kill a person, and receive seven extra days of life. After hesitating, Jaein chooses to live. The first death happens almost effortlessly — and the victim turns out to be the very uncle who had her cornered. D then burns a mark like a collar onto Jaein's neck, warning her that in exchange for life, she must experience the pain of death herself. D claims to be the murderous alter ego lurking within her, a manifestation of her darkest thoughts — and with that cryptic declaration, disappears. And so Jaein begins using carefully engineered accidents to kill, one life at a time, in exchange for more time to live.
