When a grandmother is told that Eunhye, the granddaughter her family waited generations to have, is destined to die young, she secretly switches Eunhye with Siyeon — another baby girl born the same day at the same hospital. Years pass, and at seventeen, when the family raising Eunhye falls into financial hardship, the grandmother brings the girl she raised as Eunhye into her home under the pretense that she is a distant relative. Siyeon only discovers the truth of the switch on her twenty-fifth birthday. The pain compounds: her real parents worked themselves to the bone and died never knowing her, and the man she was promised to marry has ended up with Eunhye instead. Then, on her twenty-seventh birthday, after finally hearing the full truth from Eunhye herself, Siyeon can no longer hold back. She turns to Eunhye and speaks a single wish out loud — and what follows from those words sets something enormous in motion. "Today is my birthday too, and I haven't made my wish yet. So make it come true by wishing along with me. My wish is this: that you become exactly as unhappy as I am. Not more, not less — just as unhappy as me, Eunhye."
