South Korea in the early 1960s — a time of sweeping change in the country's food culture. In the years after the war, hunger has become a fact of everyday life, with ordinary people surviving on watery gruel scraped together from U.S. military base scraps. Jeon Jung-yoon is consumed by one goal: to put a real, proper meal on the table for his starving countrymen. A newly discharged KATUSA soldier turned company employee, Kim Hang-pil, joins Jeon's cause with a loved one in mind. Meanwhile, Hang-pil's unrequited love, Lee Young-hee, carries her own wounds from the war, selling her humble porridge from a makeshift shack in a shantytown. Driven by devotion to the people around them and a refusal to accept hunger as fate, these three set in motion the events that will give birth to one of Korea's most iconic comfort foods — instant noodles.
