Somehow, I've gone and charmed the heir to the Lysanthus Duchy. He casually reaches over and takes my hand, and I sigh, twisting free of his grip. "Friends don't do things like this," I tell him. "You're blushing over a little hand-holding, Rien?" he teases — though it's a bold thing to say for someone whose entire face has gone red. "I could do a lot more than hold your hand," he adds, his voice smooth and confident, while his blue eyes refuse to meet mine. Smooth talk doesn't count for much when you can't even make eye contact, you idiot. Then one day, his mother pulls out a fat coin purse and offers to pay me to stay away from her son. I study the purse in silence, rest my chin on my clasped hands, and say with a straight face, "We're just friends, not a couple — so I suppose I just need to stop spending time with Carsion starting today?" She shoots to her feet, trembling with rage. I brace for a slap, or maybe a glass of water to the face. Instead, she declares, "You pass!" "...Excuse me?"
