Amarion is a knight from a harsh northern kingdom who spends her days fighting monsters. Out of nowhere, she receives a marriage proposal from Grand Duke Mort — a man so feared he is known as "the walking death." The enormous dowry he offers could save her struggling homeland, so she accepts. But on their wedding night, he presents her with a bewildering arrangement: her only duty as his wife is to stay awake and remain by his side while he sleeps — and if what she witnesses becomes too much to bear, she is free to cut him down, and he will not blame her. As her sleepless nights by his side stretch on, his demeanor grows unexpectedly tender, and death itself seems to smile at her with an intoxicating warmth.
