Greta, a commoner, has spent her life believing that love means little without money or status. Shaped by her parents’ failed marriage and her father’s obsession with nobility, she sees marriage as the surest way to rise above her station. Edmund, a noble, believes the opposite and thus despises Greta’s view of love and ambition.
