Synopsis

Charlotte is a girl who has always lived with her nose in a book, dreaming of writing and literature — until her younger brother's death in battle shatters those dreams and forces her to take work as a maid in a powerful marquess's household. There she meets two people: the enigmatic Marquess Matthew, whose true nature remains veiled in mystery, and his daughter Annemarie, who has just returned home after years of study abroad. Both of them come to Charlotte with secret requests. Matthew asks her to write letters on his behalf — urgent ones, that absolutely no one else must see. Annemarie asks her to keep a close eye on Matthew's every move. Unable to refuse either of them, Charlotte finds herself writing two sets of letters each week: ones that impersonate the marquess, and ones that report his every action to Annemarie. She has no idea what consequences those letters will set in motion.
